You didn't mention the name of the book, but film I watched is called "Johnny Got His Gun" and it dates back to 1971. Since it was directed by Trumbo, I'm assuming that it is based directly on the book. I think it can be a bit hard to track down, but I have found people selling the DVD version by Shout Factory online.

I think what really makes this film unique is that the rights to it are now owned by the heavy metal band, Metallica. This is because they actually wrote a song about the movie, called One, which I believe was big hit for them. The lyrics of the song directly references the character who lost his limbs, eyes, nose, ears and mouth. From what I understand, they used snippets from the movie in the music video for the song and ended up buying the film rights in order to keep showing the music video. While the subject matter is very dark and disturbing, the movie is not as gory as one would think and mostly deals with the emotional turmoil of the protagonist. I'm definitely going to track down the book as I'm very curious now about how the two might deviate. I think it is the type of story that probably features more depth in the book compared to the movie. Anyway, I just thought I'd let other people here know what the name of the book is and the interesting connection with the Metallica song.

06/24/2019
